Sustainable Packaging for Live Microgreens!

Please note: since live microgreens will have moisture we recommend using the reversible version of any size microgreen container listed because of the higher wet strength than the Kraft-only versions.  We do also have growers using soil and using these boxes! Features of our Microgreen Containers

• 100% recyclable
• Biodegradable in a backyard compost pile
• Containers are sturdy enough to stack 3-6 layers tall

• Reversible versions hold up under temperature transitions with very high wet strength (same cardboard is used in beer bottle carriers)

• Easy to hand assemble, some designs are reversible with white on one side, natural on the other
• Single and full-color printing available for just 10,000 minimum (approximately a pallet), brown side can be hand-stamped

• In high volumes, containers are the same price as plastic and eliminate need for sticky labels
• Cut microgreens in sample boxes should be consumed immediately but live microgreens on grow pads can last a week to a week in boxes with no watering
• Containers need to be hand-formed but we also have available a machine former for larger volume growers (small deposit, 5-year lease for high volumes)
• Sizes do not hold exactly the same amount as current grocery store 8 oz mounded plastic tubs but this gives you an opportunity to resize, rebrand and remarket at a better price per pound.

CUT MICROGREENS? Are you wanting to use these boxes with all their beautiful vents to sell cut microgreens in? Ya can...but you should probably tell your customer to transfer them to their own airtight container when they get home if they aren't planning to eat them right away like some of our growers do. Vented microgreens oxidize quickly, losing their antioxidants and going limp within hours. For those selling to grocery stores, other growers put their microgreens in a very thin bag and then put them in the boxes. The bag keeps the greens fresh while the box provides protection and marketing opportunities.

One grower recommends a bag called Keep It Fresh Produce Bags. He cuts these bags into smaller sizes and heat seals them (he finds the compostable ones are too breathable) and his greens will last in a market up to 2 weeks. Alternatively, you could even use a very thin bag like the ones used as ICE BUCKET LINERS.  Though these bags are made out of plastic, they are very cost-effective and can be reused for some other noble purpose after the customer is done like pet poop disposal. And! There's also the reusable option for cut microgreens! Our Eco-Takeout To-Go containers on our main Sun Sugar Farms website are dishwasher safe and can be used as part of a reusable container deposit program. For a small deposit fee your customers simply bring back the rinsed out "used" container and pick up their new order in a clean takeout one.
